The ABC For Life team consists of staff and volunteers that are all committed to making an impact in education – starting in the Hout Bay Valley.

Gailyn Scarpa

Head Teacher and Board member

Gailyn has over twelve years of experience of teaching in the Foundation Phase and holds a diploma from UNISA. She has spearheaded the ABC for Life program since 2007. Her particular interests are investing her time and energy to transform the lives of learners around her.

Nyaradzo Purazi

Project Coordinator

Nyara has over 12 years of experience in project management and implementation. She has worked for humanitarian organizations such as the Oxfam UK and the Musasa Project and was an educator on Gender-based Violence. In Zimbabwe, she worked on an initiative to raise awareness of the importance of childhood education. She holds an Honors degree in English and Communications.

Annelize Strydom

Teacher

Annelize has over 10 years of teaching experience and holds a degree in Education. She has taught a variety of curriculums and has homeschooled her own three children. She has been with ABC since 2017.

Mercia Adams

Teacher

A very motivated and energetic educator with 30 years of experience in remedial teaching. For 14 years she has worked in Special school in Cape Town

Yunith Langeveldt

Teacher

A result-driven, qualified foundation phase teacher with 20 years of hands-on experience. As a self-proclaimed bookworm, she believes every child can and should experience the joy of reading. A dramatic storyteller who knows how to captivate little minds to instill a love for reading.

Carmelita Barnett

Volunteer Head

Carmelita Barnett joined ABC for Life in 2016. She is a multi-talented person and a role model to her community, also facilitating the after-school activity program.

Gavinisha

After School Support Head

Gavinisha has over three years experience of working with children. Before she joined ABC for Life in 2018, she volunteered at Wavecrest Educare Centre and Tay’s Tots. She runs the …

Cheree-lee Davids

Volunteer

Cheree-lee is a role model for youngsters in the Hangberg community. She started volunteering at ABC for life in 2016 and once work with EPWP in a youth holiday program.

Board members

Lola Kramer

Founder & Trustee

A pillar of the Hout Bay community, Lola has been involved in real estate in Hout Bay and Llandudno for over 30 years. She and Val established ABC for Life in 2007.

Val Toledo

Founder & Trustee

Val has nearly thirty years of experience in adult literacy. Starting her career in Remedial Education, she developed an English Bridging training program for immigrant refugees to South Africa. She is a Corporate Training specialist and an expert in coaching and empowering professionals.

Deon Welz

Trustee

Deon is the Director of the Milton Matsemela law firm and has been a practicing attorney since 1993. He has been on the ABC for Life board since 2017. He holds a BA in Law and LLB from the University of Cape Town.

Nicky Broxis

Board Member 

Nicky taught at ABC for Life for two years and remains a passionate believer in the value of the program. She worked with a Johannesburg-based NGO to train educators in township schools and empower school governing bodies in informal settlements.  Nicky holds a postgraduate degree in teaching and a BSc in Business Management.

Evelyn Masemola

Sentinel Primary Governing Body Representative

Evelyn Masemola is a trustee of Hangberg Educational Trust and serves on the Governing Body of Sentinel Primary School. She is a strong community leader with a passion for the improvement of educational services provided in the community.

Lucy Osborn

Board member

Lucy’s career Environmental management and Community Development and she has specialized inappropriate media for rural communities and marketing. She was the Chairperson of Fair Trade in South Africa for many years. She has an MPhil in Environmental Management and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in the UK.
